Some gems from Miroslav Volf and Paul Williams
Thursday, July 31st, 2008I’ve recently been listening to some sermons by Miroslav Volf, a Bosnian theologian and author of a great book called ‘Exclusion and Embrace’. I’ve become a fan of his for his incredibly well thought out view of Scripture and how it relates to life. Here’s some of his best from some lectures about faith:
In terms of material gain
“What we have always lags behind what we want”
On the goal of our work
“When we see the ultimate goal of our work as taking care of ourselves, we find that we unwittingly lock ourselves into the squirrel wheel of dissatisfaction. It is like Lewis Carroll’s curse – it takes all the running we can do to stay in the same place.”
On our worth in God’s eyes
“God gives us a sense of worth beyond our success and beyond our failures”
And here’s some from Paul Williams, a British economist and Christian:
On community in a globalised world
“In a globalised world, mobile international capital is creating a borderless world in which everyone belongs equally anywhere, but nobody is at home in community.”
On our reason for being
“The relational logic of Jubilee recognises that persons have their identity in community, not in isolation.”
