When you first study the Bible at university level, it can be a bit overwhelming.
You have to learn about the various theories and methods used to study the Bible! Hermeneutics, liberation theology, higher criticism, redactors, editors, source theory.
Some of these methods seem hell-bent on cutting the Scriptures up until there is nothing left! You begin to wonder what’s going on.
But then you learn about the methods they used to use, and why we don’t take them seriously anymore.
You come to realise that all these theories are just that, theories. And that the theories come and the theories go, but one thing has remained long after these theories have been dismissed and forgotten – and that is the Bible itself!
Experts, theories and methods come and go; but the profound stories in Scripture seem to last forever!
Paul Clark’s musings can be heard on radio across Australia and at atthetop.org.au.
