The Australian Christian Lobby has thanked the 41 Queensland state MPs who voted against what they have described as a “radical abortion bill” after it was passed last night.
Passed 50 to 41 with all MPs given a conscience vote, the bill has legalised abortion in the state, allowing terminations to be available on request up to 22 weeks gestation and after 22 weeks if two medical practitioners agree the abortion should be performed. The bill also establishes 150 metre “safe access zones” around abortion clinics.
Wendy Francis, the ACL’s Queensland state director, thanked the 41 MPs who “stood for life and the inherent humanity of babies who have yet to be born” and said passing the bill “will not stop us from advocating for better support for women at a community level”.
“ACL continues to uphold the sanctity of life and will lobby for the protection of both women and children from the devastating impact of this extreme bill,” she said.
