Organisers of Australia’s National Day of Prayer and Fasting are encouraging Christians across the country to join in a New Year’s Day ‘sunrise prayer relay’.
The second time the event has been held, it involves gathering in a public place – whether a hill, lookout or local landmark – and praying as sunrise takes places. The organisers suggest people arrive 15 minutes before sunrise to start.
“We encourage you to pray the Lord’s Prayer (Matt[hew] 6:9-13) together aloud as the sun rises and make a declaration that Jesus Christ is Lord of your life, your family, your region and your nation,” they write on the initiative’s website.
“Your location might like to include praise and worship in your prayers. You could even take communion, have a time of fellowship or evangelism. Some churches might want to incorporate the New Year’s Day Sunrise Prayer Relay into their Sunday services.”
Those who do take part are invited to share photos and videos from their event on social media, using the hashtag #sunriseprayerrelay.
