Today’s expected signing of a peace agreement between the Colombian Government and rebel group FARC represents an “historic opportunity”, according to the president of the Colombian Catholic bishops conference.
Fides reports that Archbishop Luis Augusto Castro Quiroga said the event was “reason for much joy”.
“It is a great blessing,” said the archbishop of Tunja. “There is one last step to reach the final goal: the referendum of October 2. Colombia has a historic opportunity, a watershed separating the period before and after peace. The country can finally usher in a new course entailing the resolution to its problems”.
The document will be signed in the Colombian city of Cartegena and follows peace talks held in Cuba. The ceremony is expected to be attended by the presidents of 15 nations and the heads of international organisations.
