Mother Teresa will be made a Roman Catholic saint at a ceremony to be held in early September, Pope Francis has announced.
The canonisation ceremony of the Nobel Prize laureate will take place on 4th September at the Vatican, a decision which has reportedly disappointed some Indian Catholics who had hoped the Pope would use the opportunity to visit India.
Known for her work among the poor in the slums of of Kolkata, Mother Teresa, born of Albanian parents in part of what was then the Ottoman Empire but is now Macedonia, died in 1997 at the age of 87. She had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her work.
She was beatified – the first step towards sainthood – by Pope John Paul II in 2003 and last December, Pope Francis cleared the way for the canonisation to take place.
