Roman Catholic priest becomes third in a week to be murdered in Mexico

A Roman Catholic priest has been found shot dead in Mexico, a week after he was kidnapped.

Prosecutors have reportedly said the body of José Alfredo Lopez Guillen was found late on Saturday near the town of Puruandiro in Michoacan state with multiple bullet wounds. He was robbed and abducted from his home in Janamuato last Monday.

Fr Guillen is the third Catholic priest to be killed in Mexico in a week and, according to figures from the Catholic Multimedia Center, brings to 15 the number of priests murdered in Mexico since 2012.

His death comes after bodies of Fr Alejo Nabor Jiménez Juárez and Fr José Alfredo Suárez de la Cruz were found by the side of a road in Veracruz state last Monday – the same day of Fr Guillen’s kidnapping. The murders are reportedly not believed to be connected.
