Tens of thousands are expected to mark the 110th anniversary of the historic Azusa Street Revival in the US this week.
A 15 hour healing and evangelism crusade, Azusa Now, will be held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Saturday, 9th April, with 100,000 people expected to attend while in Washington, DC, at least 30,000 church leaders are expected to gather at the National Mall to pray for America’s future in an event dubbed United Cry DC16.
Lou Engle, who will host Azusa Now, said that he has been stunned by the “corporate anticipation of a bold, new Jesus movement arising from every sector of the Body of Christ”. “Revival hangs heavy in the air, waiting to fall with an explosion of evangelism, racial healing, awakening and miracles,” he said.
Others speaking at the event will include Bill Johnson, Heidi Baker, and Todd White with Bethel Music and Jesus Culture to lead worship.
Meanwhile, among those expected to speak at the United Cry DC16 will be Anne Graham Lotz, Ed Silvoso, Alveda King and Doug Stringer.
Both events will be shown on GOD TV. President Wendy Alec said the 1906 revival was the “most powerful expression of revival in modern times as multitudes became Christians and experienced healing”.
“It as also a historic moment that transcended barriers as diverse people gathered in bonds of love, unity and prayer.”
The Azusa Street Revival, led by African American pastor William J Seymour, began in Los Angeles, in 1906 and lasted several years. It was characterised by the spiritual experiences of participants, notably speaking in tongues, as well as the mixing of races and absence of traditions such as an order of service. The revival was key moment in the history of Pentecostalism, both in the US and around the globe.
