US presidential race remains tight

The race between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump to become the 45th US president remains tight with some key states including Florida and North Carolina still in the balance.

Polls in much of the country have no closed and more than 30 states have so far been called. As of 10.49pm US time, The New York Times has called 168 electoral college votes for Republican Trump and 109 for Democrat Clinton.

The strength of Mr Trump’s support has surprised many pundits with commentary that even should Ms Clinton win the election, she will not have the mandate Democrats had hoped for.

World financial markets, meanwhile, have dropped as concern grows about a possible Trump victory.

Both candidates were in New York City and pundits have suggested the result may not be known tonight (US time).

Meanwhile, US TV networks have reported that Republicans will retain control over the US House of Representatives.
