This Life: Receiving the “second-worst” phone call

“The Lord watches over you – the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night” – Psalm 121:5-8

This week I received the second worst phone call any parent can get.

It was from my older son. He was on his way back home from his MMA training. The roads were very wet and he had decided to take a back road that was windy and steep.

“Knowing our mighty God was watching over him and the main victims were the car, the fence and the sign post, I am eternally grateful to our Creator for His watching over us.”

“Firstly, I’m fine,” he said when I answered the phone.

My heart skipped a beat or two when I asked what had happened.

“I may have rolled my car ‘a bit’.”

Now, I am not sure what levels ‘a bit’ constitutes when it comes to car rolls, but he soon explained that he had come around the bend in the road and the slippery conditions caused him to fish tail. The car had spun 180 degrees and rolled backwards into a fence, flipping onto its side.

My son had to climb out of the passenger side above him after he found his phone, then called me.

When his younger brother and I arrived on the scene he was safely out of the car and being kept company by some passers-by who had stopped to help.

As we waited for the tow-truck to arrive, we inspected the damage and noticed he had missed hitting a massive, big tree and the car had stopped just before a steep ditch.

My son had climbed out of the car without a scratch on him, although his neck and ribs were sore the next day.

Sadly, I couldn’t say the same for the fence as it was flattened, as was the street sign that had obviously fallen victim to my son’s out of control car.

Considering we did not receive the worst phone call – the one from the police – and that my son was able to come home safely with us and live another day, I feel as though we received our Christmas miracle.

Knowing our mighty God was watching over him and the main victims were the car, the fence and the sign post, I am eternally grateful to our Creator for His watching over us.

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a blessed 2025.
