“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life. Whoever rejects the Son will not see life. Instead, the wrath of God remains on him.” – John 3:36

I recently went to visit my dad who lives in Sydney and we were discussing the results of the Paris Olympics, which were still on during my time with him.

We both love watching this conglomeration of sporting activities every four years, so our conversation was animated and enthusiastic.

“Now, I have no idea what Heaven will be like, but one thing I know for sure, is we won’t be counting down our years.”

Then my dad said something that made me see things from his perspective.

He said that he had to really enjoy these games, as he figured he wouldn’t be around for them when they are in Los Angeles in another four years.

My dad is a sprightly 82-years young and, although he wouldn’t agree, is very healthy for his age.

He still drives himself around, lives independently and loves getting out in the garden.

I figure he has at least another eight years in him, which would take him to the Brisbane Olympics, so that’s another two he has to look forward to.

Now, I have no idea what Heaven will be like, but one thing I know for sure, is we won’t be counting down our years.

That’s the point of eternal life.

Not only will it be eternal but it will be abundant, full of the energy of youth that wanes as we get older, full of joy without sickness or disability, and, best of all, full of the relationship we were always meant to have with our Creator.

When my maternal grandmother was 90, she was being cared for in a nursing home and was very cranky that God hadn’t taken her by that stage.

As a devout Christian lady, she knew where she was going and just wanted to get there, now!

A week before she died, she had a beautiful calm and happy spirit about her and I truly believe she knew she was on her way home.

And, as believers in Jesus, that’s what we have to look forward to.

And who knows, there may even be a Heaven Olympics to enjoy.
